In a world where clichéd power chords and screechy, high-pitched vocals dominate the airwaves, Portland-based band Archeology (a name derived from the band's lifelong hobby, according to front man Jason Davis) decides to bring a more lighthearted approach to music, emphasizing the importance of melody and rhythm in their songs. This approach, in turn, lets the band create a sound that encompasses jangly, feel good all into one album.

Their first release, entitled Change of Address combines unconventional instruments (i.e. a smashed gin bottle) and likable lyrics that appeal to anyone who is looking for a new sound in music today. One song in particular called "MCMXIV," which has received over 40,000 plays on their Myspace page, ingeniously layers countless instruments, ranging from the glockenspiel to a cathedral organ, and it evidently channels indie rock influences from the likes of Eliot Smith and others. However, the band makes it clear that they pride in originality and find inspiration from things that go unnoticed by others, "We wanted the music to be a challenge...[we] incorporate a variety of instruments...while exploring melodies that used creative structuring," explains Davis. In other words, when bands like Archeology take pride in the craftsmanship of their work, the future can only look promising for this group.

Currently, the band is slated to play a multitude of dates all through the West Coast, and is in the works of completing a music video that accompanies "MCMXIV." Even though in the song, they sing swan songs for others, "And we'll sing her swan song," it doesn't look like they're singing their own swan song just yet.
